We put out the call, and you answered. A whopping 102 entrepreneurs applied for Ignite by our 5pm deadline on January 11, 2013. The volume exceeded our wildest dreams! We are thrilled that we could offer a competition that so excited the local business community.
The Ignite applicants come from all over Durham: from Beaverton to Ajax, Uxbridge to Orono, with a heavy representation from Whitby and Oshawa. Business ideas are diverse: software ideas, food service companies, technological inventions, even a retail space or two.
So what’s next?
We’re sending all of the applicants off to a rigorous Pitch School, where they will learn presentation skills, how to craft their value proposition, and how to create or refine their business plan.
Stay tuned to this website (www.IgniteDurham.ca) for updates on Ignite, and for profiles of the exciting local entrepreneurs we encounter on this journey. We will share with you the lessons we learn, the challenges start-up businesses face, and we will celebrate the successes along the way.
Don’t forget, in addition to providing valuable business training, Pitch School will lead us toward the Ignite Boot Camp, which will be attended by the top two companies to emerge from the selection process.
Best of luck to everyone!
