Last week the three Local Ignite Power Panels had the challenging task of whittling down a field of startup competitors from over 65 to 26 through a series of Pitch Competitions.
Now in its second year, Spark Centre’s Ignite Startup Competition saw massive engagement in the local entrepreneur community. Focusing this year only on innovative technology or invention based ventures, we accepted over 65 applications – nearly double the number in that category last year!
We’ve separated the applicants by category and held three separate competitions; Student Entrepreneur, Young Entrepreneur and General Entrepreneur. The three Pitch Competitions were run in the same format – each participant had only 60 seconds to convince a panel of judges that their startup was viable and investment worthy. This is an extremely challenging task, but represents the need to be able to communicate clearly, quickly, and to engage your audience as a startup founder, whether that audience is an investor, a customer, or a potential new team member.
All three competitions were a very tight race, with single-digit point spreads separating the top competitors that would move on to the next round! In the Young Entrepreneur category we actually saw a tie – meaning 11 ventures from that competition would advance to the Top 26.
Spark Centre would like to congratulate the 26 companies selected to move on to the Central Pitch Competition October 15th at the Abilities Centre in Whitby.
